Eudio: Application
CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Rachel Conway
CANON: Original
AGE: 30
CANON POINT: eight years into her career as a crime journalist, on the verge of publishing her first book. Also: two years after her previous stay in Eudio.
BACKGROUND:
- Born and raised in California; her father died when she was a small child, her mother briefly remarried when she was a teenager
- Her stepfather was abusive, and one night during a particularly bad argument the ladies fought back and injured him, sending him to the hospital
- Neither of them were charged; this made Rachel very aware of how different things could have turned out without eyewitnesses, and how you never really know what someone's life is like behind closed doors
- This led to an interest in both journalism, to tell people's stories, and the criminal justice system; she got her degree, worked her way up from a tiny weekly paper in San Francisco to the Los Angeles Times
- She's done well there, covering stories to give equal weight to the victim's perspective and with an eye toward understanding motivations
- Two years ago Rachel started looking into a spike in deaths at a local hospital's ICU. She uncovered information suggesting one nurse was responsible for multiple deaths at multiple hospitals--the deaths always spiked on his shift, and they stopped altogether when he moved to a new job. The hospitals weren't cooperating because having it get out that they had a murderer on staff was bad for business; the police could find no evidence to make charges stick.
- This is the point where Rachel was first approached by Eudio's representatives. She wanted to make sure this murderer was stopped, that he would be caught and jailed before anyone else could get hurt. She agreed to come to the city in return for being granted that incentive. She stayed for eight months, and returned home when she'd earned her incentive.
- In the intervening two years she has continued to work as a crime reporter in Los Angeles, covering serial murder, organized crime, and other major crimes. She's turned the case that took her to Eudio into a book that's about to be published (though she's left out the part where she traveled to a city in another dimension to put a murderer in jail).
- A few weeks before once again being approached by city reps, she began receiving death threats, strange packages at work, and, finally, a package bomb at her home (defused before anyone got hurt). She's pretty sure one of the organized crime groups she reported on is behind it--but only pretty sure, and she'd like to find a quick, sure way to get to the bottom of it and have it stopped before she gets hurt. Cue Eudio stay number two...
PERSONALITY Outwardly, Rachel is a pleasant person. She's an overachiever, she's hard-working, she's compassionate, and she's generous. She tries very hard to be an optimist, and to do whatever she can to help others. She was raised in a religious family and those ideals of social justice, public service, and standing up for others became ingrained. She seems to succeed at whatever she sets her mind to doing, because she's smart and driven, and confident in her choices and actions.
All of those qualities, while genuine parts of who she is, can also serve as a mask over what lies beneath. Everything is always fine, everything is always going great, and she is winning at whatever she does--that is the face she shows the world, and wants them to believe. A lot of the time it's even true. But there are times when she's hiding the iron grip she has on her own emotions and self-opinion. If she just does a good job and works hard and is seen as good, then, she thinks, no one will look more closely at her flaws. No one will see the sad childhood, the broken home, the strained family. No one will see the occasional lapses in judgment or self-confidence. No one will see weakness or failure.
Her drive to achieve easily makes her very ambitious and tenacious. Her strong sense of morality and her burning desire to do good, to do right by people who need help, can lead to her to just charge forward, acting in what she feels is the best interest. She takes on a lot of responsibility and tries to do so many things for so many people. She can be hard on herself, something of a perfectionist. But she's much more relaxed when it comes to other people, making friends easily, trying to see the best in them or understand their circumstances, trying to do whatever she can to be helpful and supportive.
She's a realist, very pragmatic. She has a dry sense of humor. She's adventurous, willing to try most things once. She bonds with people pretty quickly, if she's going to, and tends to remain loyal. She's fascinated by the stories people have and tell, the more different from her own, the better. She always wants to reach people, to learn about them, to help them, and to care about them.
INCENTIVE: Rachel has had several threats on her life in the past few weeks, indirect and direct. If she were 100% sure who was behind them, she'd just go to the police and have them deal with it. But she's not sure.
She wants this to stop before she or anyone else gets hurt. She'd really like to live to see her first book published. Her incentive, in return for another stay in the city, is to have whoever is behind the threats stopped, and her safety guaranteed.
FIT: her incentive is a big part of her fitting into the city. It's something she desperately wants, for this person to be stopped; she sees what she's agreed to as a deal and she is more than willing to hold up her end of it to gain her incentive.
That's not to say it's entirely a business arrangement for her. She is naturally an affectionate and tactile person, one who likes to convey how she feels through touch, and who thrives on touch herself. Expressing physical affection comes pretty easily to her given time to get to know a person a bit; she doesn't have any particular hang-ups about sex, either. She's also very curious about other people, compassionate, civic-minded, and eager to help. Back home she's done that through her work but during her stay in Eudio she would be open to getting to know people, and helping them get their incentives and helping the city at large.
CONSENT: Rachel has had a front-row seat, from her teenage years with her stepfather to her work as a crime reporter, to the damage that can be done when consent and boundaries are not respected by people. It's hard enough to see something like that; she could never stand being the cause of someone's discomfort or pain like that.
She also has a strong moral sense of right and wrong when it comes to other people. It's wrong to push for something someone is unwilling to give, it's wrong to disrespect another person's boundaries, and it's wrong to take advantage of another person. Intimacy cannot happen if both parties aren't fully aware and informed, and both willing to take part.
She's been in Eudio before and seen the way the city works up close; she's aware of its expectations and successfully navigated intimacy here with others in her first stay.
SAMPLES: one; two; three; four.
ANYTHING ELSE? I am reapping Rachel with her memories of her previous stay in Eudio intact, so that she can retain some of her past CR. If I have made incorrect assumptions about this being possible, or if I need to make any changes to make the reapp successful, please let me know, I am happy to do what's needed. Thank you!
