Physical changes: none.
Powers: Nothing superhuman. She's a talented investigative journalist with a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the supernatural, and some familiarity with magickal practices(though she is not herself a practitioner).
History: here.
Hell Status: Hell newbie
What Brings Them To Hell: Four months ago she poisoned a serial poisoner. She'd been writing about the case, the cops couldn't build enough of a case against him to arrest him and stop his nonsense, so she took the law into her own hands. Totally for the greater good. Right? Right.
...So also she's got some issues with being prideful and wrathful. Her ambition and sense that she is Absolutely Right about So Many Things You Guys has also gotten her in hot water before, but killing a killer is the most extreme example of this acting up.
The Pitch: Here you have apparently the last person who should wind up in Hell. Rachel is kindhearted, she's helpful, she's civic-minded, she's a nice person, she's a champion of the downtrodden and victims of crime. She gives to charity! She works hard! She's won commendations from the police!
Rachel is absolutely all of these things, but there's more to her than her pleasant exterior. Her outward capability and hard work are attractive dress on what would otherwise be naked ambition. She wants to do more, be more, achieve more, and there have been times in her life when she hasn't been afraid to step on toes (or even necks) to get there. Her very strong personal sense of morality can spill over into feeling like she's absolutely right about things and needn't worry about the things she chooses to do. She takes action for all the right reasons but sometimes those actions may not be the most acceptable or agreeable choices.
She's convinced herself she acts for the greater good. Look at all the praise! Look at everything she's achieved! Look at the people she's helped or saved through journalism! What's meant to be altruism and working to her full potential has started to go dark around the edges. Over time she's crept closer and closer to the line that declares the ends justify the means, first with smaller infractions like breaking into crime scenes to examine them for herself, then working up to leaning on sources a little harder than others might, perhaps, to digging into a subject's background with a bit of spite, laying out all his dirty laundry rather than confining it to the case at hand. And then she tipped right over the line a few months ago, poisoning a man when the police couldn't make a case against him. She knew she was right, and she was saving lives, so that made it okay, right?
Wrong. Arriving in hell is going to be one serious shock. Doing the wrong things, even if it's for what you think are the right reasons, is still wrong. That's going to be a very bitter pill to swallow for someone as full of pride as she is. She's going to have to face up to the choices she's made.
Once she's past that shock she'll probably fit in well enough in Hell. They say the road there is paved with good intentions and she sure set a few stones along the way. But she's still ambitious and still ready to climb, climb, and make something of herself.
Setting Fit: Starting out in the Hive, shocked and full of Catholic guilt ("oh shit man mom and the priests were right, I fucked up". There'll be an initial adjustment period and then she'll work to get herself in with whatever media/news Hell has, to be a presenter or reporter. She's actually well-suited to reporting in Hell, as she mostly worked the crime beat up above, and has therefore had a lot of exposure to the horrible shit people do to one another. She'll still want to do a very good job and tell very good stories but she's still ambitious, too, and Hell could appeal very much to that side of herself.
Personality: Outwardly, Rachel is a pleasant person. She's an overachiever, she's hard-working, she's compassionate, and she's generous. She tries very hard to be an optimist, and to do whatever she can to help others. She was raised in a religious family and those ideals of social justice, public service, and standing up for others became ingrained. She seems to succeed at whatever she sets her mind to doing, because she's smart and driven, and confident in her choices and actions.
All of those qualities, while genuine parts of who she is, are also a mask over what lies beneath. Everything is always fine, everything is always going great, and she is winning at whatever she does--that is the face she shows the world, and wants them to believe. A lot of the time it's even true. But there are times when he's hiding the iron grip she has on her own emotions and self-opinion. If she just does a good job and works hard and is seen as good, then, she thinks, no one will look more closely at her flaws. No one will see the sad childhood, the broken home, the strained family. No one will see the occasional lapses in judgment or self-confidence. No one will see weakness or failure.
There are harder edges to her, parts of herself she tries to blunt when presenting her capable face to the world. Her drive to achieve easily spills over into boundless ambition. Her strong sense of morality can shift into a sense of being above reproach or question. Her burning desire to do good, to do right by people who need help, can lead to her sometimes feeling like she can do things that are less than above board and acceptable in order to get to the good goal at the end.
Because she is genuinely and nakedly ambitious, and also very much wants to be seen as someone who as achieved a lot and done a lot of good, she takes on a lot of responsibility and tries to do so many things for so many people. She can be hard on herself, something of a perfectionist. But she's much more relaxed when it comes to other people, making friends easily, trying to see the best in them or understand their circumstances, trying to do whatever she can to be helpful and supportive.
She's a realist, very pragmatic. She has a dry sense of humor. She's adventurous, willing to try most things once. She bonds with people pretty quickly, if she's going to, and tends to remain loyal. She's fascinated by the stories people have and tell, the more different from her own, the better.
Samples: Sample 1; Sample 2; and a couple of short threads from the TDM.
