May I ask what kind of scientist you are?

What requires you to to have such a wide range of skills? Why do you favor programming over the other fields you've studied?
no subject
You are correct. It does require the use of close examination and establishment of standards. Many do not see it as such.
I am first officer on a star ship, and as such, I oversee the various departments and scientists in the science branch on the ship and am required to report both to my captain and our governing body about the findings we come across. Also required to formulate hypotheses and provide answers, often under extreme duress. Programming is not a favored subject, but my skills were most needed there.

I don't know if it's the same where you're from, but I think--where I'm from--people who aren't involved in science as a profession or calling feel like it's this very rigid sterile thing that only happens in a lab. It's something they studied in school and once they're done with school that's it, it's over. They aren't able to make the connection that the same sets of skills, the same idea of inquiry and standards, carries over into so many more things. And they don't see real-world applications of the things they did study in school.
That makes sense. I assume the purpose of your travels is exploration? Or research? The ship as a whole would need people with a wide range of knowledge and expertises, and of course the person supervising those people and their work must himself be both able to call on extensive knowledge and training, and willing to take up important work not covered by others.
A star ship, though. We've only just made a few small moves in that direction. We've put men on the moon, we've put a space station in orbit, we've sent probes out into the solar system and beyond.

Meeting people who have such analytic skills is always a pleasure. Do you employ these skills for your writing?
What year was it in your home, if you do not mind me asking? It sounds like a familiar description of Earth some 200 or so years before my time.
no subject
Thank you. I do use it in my writing. I'm an investigative reporter and I've just written my first book, back home. It might not seem that a writer would use analytical skills in their work but I do: when I gather facts about a story or a case I want to write about, I do need to figure out which facts are important and which are not. Analytical thinking also does play a part in the creative process, in deciding how to structure and tell the story based on the information you have.
When I was last home, it was December of 2017. I say "just" but it's been nearly fifty years since we first landed on the moon. In my time we had sent unmanned probes beyond the solar system, and to Mars and Jupiter for extended exploration.
May I ask what year it was in your home? And where you hail from, if not Earth?
apologies for the lateness of this reply! ;;
Your grasp of logical approaches to writing is exemplary. While I am unacquainted with many authors in my world, the descriptions of their writing process often lacks any logic or analysis, and some might benefit from a more studied approach such as one you hold.
It is the year 2259. I was born on Vulcan, which has been destroyed in my world.
NO WORRIES seriously i am never fussed about late replies ok let's just tag
[ ...oh. ]
I assume Vulcan was a planet, as you said you were born "on" it? My deepest condolences on your loss. On your people's loss.

If this isn't too jarring a change of subject: do you drink coffee or tea?
no subject
I imbibe both, though tea is my preference. Are you by chance suggesting a coffee date?
no subject
I am. If you would be interested in arranging some in-person conversation sometime. I would be.

What is your schedule like?
no subject
And what about your schedule?

That being said, I am most often free early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.

What do you write about?
no subject
Crimes, mostly. I've been a reporter covering them and now I am working on some books about them. I might branch off into other things someday.
Do you compose music as well as play?
no subject
I don't think I could ever write a book...
Music though, definitely.
I mostly just play covers nowadays, actually, but I have and can compose. I'd have to brush off the rust.
no subject
Do you regularly play somewhere in the city?
no subject
Sometimes I pick up gigs at other places but nothing steady just yet.

It's a great place.
Why'd you stop going?
Just out of curiosity.

I used to have a lot more free time for going out but I took a full-time job a couple of months ago.
